Need to Know
âIHAVE SURPRISING NEWS,â Suley said.
Wahid grunted. âYou often think you do.â
âLast week in Kabul I went by the orphanage where that spineless fool Ahmad kept me. He hasnât obeyed the edict. Hasnât sent all the boys to the madrasah. Even worse.â
Suley liked to stretch out his stories, make himself important, the little popinjay. Wahid motioned for him to leave. âIâm thinking of more important things. Battles, changes in the law. People must be controlled to create a perfect Islamic republic.â
âI saw a woman there... Your brotherâs living with a whore.â
Wahid said nothing. Then, âYou should not have told me.â
âThe truth should always be told. Whatever filthy secrets, perversions, the Devilâs dealings people do ââ
âHow did you learn this?â
âLong ago I killed three Pashtùn in a cellar. I told you this when I first came to you. They were holding a woman and doing it to her. One left his rifle on the stairs. I killed them. And now, when I was checking the orphanage... itâs the same woman.â
âIt canât be. That Ahmad would take...â
Suley leaned back, his eyes narrow under deep lids. âSuppose it were known that the Eagle of the Hindu Kush has a whoremonger for a brother? What would that make you?â
After Suley left Wahid sat thinking. The desert people long ago told how Kâbil and Hâbil, Cain and Abel, each had a twin sister, and God told Adam to order each to marry the otherâs twin sister. This Kâbil would not do, wanting his own sister because she was more beautiful. âSo you each make an offering to God,â Adam said, âlet Him decide.â
Kâbil offered God a sheaf of his worst corn, while Hâbil the little ass-kisser gave up his fattest lamb. Godâs fire came down in a tornado from Heaven and consumed the fat lamb, but didnât touch the corn of Kâbil. Kâbil turned with righteous anger on his brother saying, âYou have shamed me. I will slay you.â
Hâbil the spineless fool taunted Kâbil, âGod only accepts the offerings of the pious. Even if you raise your hand to slay me I wonât raise mine at you, for I fear only God.â
So the Devil showed Kâbil how to kill Hâbil, by crushing the head of a lapwing between two stones. But once Hâbil was dead Kâbil stupidly felt guilty, for a long time carried the stinking corpse of his brother on his back. Till God sent down a raven to kill another raven and scratch with his claws a hole in the earth to bury it, showing Kâbil how to bury Hâbil. And the children of Kâbil inherited the earth.
If God hadnât wanted this, how could it have happened?
